Sermon Series - Summer 2008 St Mark’s
Morning Series I was on holiday last week and got into conversation with a salesman trying to sell us membership of a Holiday Club! At one point he said this; “We want you to have a fantastic experience, because we know you will then tell your friends and we will sell more. Our marketing strategy relies on people telling their friends.” This sent my thinking off for a moment away from his patter. “Isn’t that what we should be about in the church, I thought?” The purpose of Chesterfest is that it gives us an opportunity to share the good news of forgiveness, new life and hope in Jesus. God has ordained it that those who have discovered it gossip the message of Good News in Christ - but we have forgotten it, neglected it or come to rely on the ‘professionals’ to do it for us. In the mornings we shall be looking at what the Bible says about how it’s supposed to work and realizing the potential that is in all of us!

Evening Series. If I were to ask you what your ideas of God were, some of them might be ideas that you have held since childhood. Whilst being very powerful images they are often inadequate. There are many images of God from the Bible that help us to understand what God is like – they are deliberately used by the Bible writers to reveal more of Him. As we study these images (or pictures) of God that we have selected, what is important is that we grasp the reality behind the image, so that can respond in a way that enables us to bring that reality into our daily lives in a practical way. The more we understand these biblical images of God, the more we shall understand both God’s mystery and His humility.
