Sermon Series - Autumn  2009         St Mark’s

MORNING SERIES.  This autumn things are somewhat fragmented due to different events taking place within each month. This October we are going with a request from Saltney Council to hold a civic service. We see this as an opportunity to embrace our community and engage with those who serve it. It will be a great opportunity again to welcome visitors and hopefully to extend the warmth of Christian fellowship.

So there will only be three topics on the theme for the year, one in each month, and they will be looking at three parables on the nature of servanthood from Jesus Himself.  As I said at the beginning of the year, in a world that constantly preaches, ‘look after number one first’; the true follower of Jesus needs to have a servant heart, which then opens the door to endless possibilities for God to do things through them.

The Lighthouse will be following the Church of England lectionary as they have nearly all their services free of other things

EVENING SERIES.  Peter’s letters were written somewhere around AD64 /68 and were therefore written during a time of persecution. The Emperor of the time hated the Jews and included Christians in that. In just a few years the Roman army would destroy Jerusalem and make captives of the population. The issue then for the church leaders at this time was how to encourage believers to persevere and endure. Both letters are aimed at preparing Christians for tough times. But, tough as things were, these letters are full of hope and practical advice on how to go on with Christ and not give up. They tell us how to balance holy living with correct doctrine, to nurture spiritual growth and work within the secular society they found themselves in. These themes are very much still relevant today and provide us with a compass for our own faith journey that will inevitably include some tough times. If you don’t attend the evening normally why not come along and study these letters with us?
